Ultra Running and Marathons

The West Highland Way and the surrounding Scottish Highlands are becoming increasingly popular with ultra-runners due to the open and varied terrain we have here and no doubt the spectacular scenery plays its part also. There are now four Ultra-runs that take place each year and 3 of them, either start, finish or pass through Tyndrum. Below we have details of all the Ultra-runs – if you’re interested in participating we have links to each race web site where you can sign up.

The Highland Fling

2012 Highland Fling winner Scott Bradley, finishing the race at By The Way

The annual Highland Fling Race is a 53 mile multi-terrain ultra run along the West Highland Way from Milngavie ending at Tyndrum, right outside By The Way.

As this follows along the West Highland Way, you’re almost entirely off road, so you’re sure to see some varied terrain and off course some stunning scenery.

The race is usually held in late April each year, if you’re interested, head over to the Highland Fling Race site for more information and how to sign up.

After the race, there’s plenty of food, drink and even massage therapists on hand to cure those aching limbs. Later in the evening, there is a traditional Scottish Ceilidh held in Tyndrum Village Hall, open to all competitors and is usually a great night.

Devil O’ The Highlands

The Devil o’ the Highlands is a 43 mile race which starts in Tyndrum and follows the West Highland Way to its finish in Fort William. Similarly to the Highland Fling, this is mostly off-road following the Highland Way so you’ll experience some interesting terrain and of course beautiful scenery along the way.

The race starts early at 6AM at the ‘Green Welly Stop’ shop carpark in Tyndrum village (about 500 yards from By The Way) – you can stock up on last minute provisions as they open early on race day. The race is usually held around the start of August every year – head over to the Devil O’ The Highlands web site for more information and how to register.

The West Highland Way Race

As the name suggests, this run covers the entire 95 mile length of the West Highland Way from Milngavie all the way to Fort William.

Given the distance, you start at 1AM in Milngavie, so you’ll be running the first stage in low light – however, the race is held around the time of the Summer Solstice, and given Scotlands relatively high latitude, you should see the sun starting to rise around 4AM.

If you’re mad enough to try this, head over to the West Highland Way Race web site and sign-up!

Glen Ogle 33

The Glen Ogle 33 is a 33 mile race that starts in Strathyre (about 40 minutes from Tyndrum). You route takes you to Killin, next to Loch Lyon and then back again to Strathyre (a different route on the way back). The terrain is either forest track or cycle path and there are quite a few inclines, but no major hills to deal with.

The race takes place in early November, so the Scottish weather may add a bit of excitement (and challenge!) to the run. Head over the Glen Ogle 33 site for more information.
