Where we are

We are in the village of Tyndrum in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and situated about halfway between Glencoe and the north end of Loch Lomond. We are about 300 metres from the main Glasgow to Oban and Fort William road, adjacent to Tyndrum Lower Station. There are only three trains a day (the Glasgow to Oban line) and all trains stop at the station so your beauty sleep should not be disturbed!

We are surrounded by Munros (and Corbetts) with no shortage of lochs and rivers (for fishermen) and no shortage of white water around for kayakers.

More importantly, for the many who pass through Tyndrum on a long distance walk or cycle trips:

  • West Highland Way (south to north): we are just past the half way point. By The time you reach Tyndrum the slow and difficult slog along Loch Lomondside is behind you and the joys of the Blackmount, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe and the Mamore hills beckon.
  • Highland Highway: similar to the West Highland Way but going over the high mountain tops instead of through the glens and low passes. We are also at about the halfway point which means you still have about 80 miles to go with almost 9,000 feet of ascent).
  • Land’s End to John o’ Groats: you will have covered well over half way and the well known saying “the best is yet to come” has rarely been more apt.
  • Coast to Coast: many of the routes pass through Tyndrum but regardless of which one you’re tackling there still will be a long way to go. You should be pleased to know, however, that Tyndrum is about 800 feet above sea level and, more pleasingly still, whether you are travelling the West Highland Way, the Highland Highway, Groat’s End or Coast to Coast your finish point is at sea level. This means that however much you have to climb, you still have a further 800 feet of descent.

Getting to By The Way

As we’re located directly on the West Highland Way a great number of our guests arrive here under their own steam – and usually with tired feet! But we’re not here just for weary Wayfarers, we’re also an excellent location for all types of outdoor activities – or just a peaceful break from the rat-race.

There’s a number of ways to get to us, including:

  • Road – we’re at the important “Highland crossroads” where the north-south Fort William and Glasgow route (A82) meets with the east-west Perth to Oban route (A85). We’re far enough from the busy road to be peaceful, but close enough to be conveniently located.
  • Rail – We are located just a few yards (literally) from Tyndrum Lower Station. This is the line which goes from Oban to Crianlarich, and continues onwards to Glasgow Queen Street, with a fabulous, picturesque journey beside Loch Lomond. For example, you can leave London Euston in the evening via the Caledonian Sleeper and be at our site mid-morning, changing only at Glasgow!
  • Bus – we’re on a main bus route, with various journey options available. Practically all the scheduled bus services coming along this important part of the road network will stop in Tyndrum.
  • Ferry – yes, ferry! We’re only 35 miles from Oban, with very frequent services to Mull, Colonsay, Coll, Tiree, Kerrera and other islands. We’re also on the same railway line as the Oban service, with trains terminating right beside the Oban ferry terminal.
