Hillwalking in the Tyndrum area

We reckon there are around fifty Munros within twenty miles of By The Way (four of which can be easily walked directly from the site). To the South you’ll find the Arrochar Alps with Ben Vorlich and Ben Vane among them. Travel East via Crianlarich and Ben More and along Loch Tay to Ben Lawers and Meall nan Tarmachan or West to the Dalmally horseshoe and Cruachan nearby or best of all travel North past Ben Dorain and the White Corries and onto the splendours of Glencoe with the Buachailles, Aonach Eagach and Bidean to name but a few.

The following Munros are all reachable within 35 mins (by car) and there are as many again just within 45 mins. For more detailed information on all Munro’s listed here, included walking routes, where to park, etc we recommend the excellent resources at Munro Magic.

Our Favourite

The Aonach Eagach, or “Aggy Ridge” to its friends, is widely regarded as one of the classic mainland traverses. Narrow and exposed in places, there are no practical escape routes along the ridge until you reach the other end. On a clear June day, it is unbeatable.

It’s in the Glencoe range and includes 2 munros – Meall Dearg & Sgor nam Fiannaidh (see table above) – about 25 minutes drive from Tyndrum.

Corbetts

If Munros don’t appeal there are also a good few Corbetts (hills between 2,500 and 3,000 feet) on the doorstep. This time a shorter list and although the hills are not so high they still offer a challenge in their own right. If you need proof of this have a look at Ben Arthur (better known, of course, as the Cobbler), in Arrochar.

Regardless of whether it be Munros, Corbetts or just a wander midst the hills, there’s a great selection right on our doorstep.
